10 Fail-proof Spring Family Photoshoot tips
What to wear and other ideas for your spring family photoshoot
A Spring family photoshoot is an awesome idea – it’s a great time of year in the Netherlands, and everywhere birds are singing, and flowers are blooming plenty. Between March and May, there are some fantastic photoshoot locations and opportunities to try out, not to mention the multitude of holidays to celebrate like easter and Mothers day. What can be tricky though is figuring out what to wear for your spring family photoshoot, as the weather can still be a little bit … iffy. But with a little guidance and a lot of patience, you can still get fantastic family photos with these spring family photoshoot outfit ideas and inspiration.
First Here is a great family photoshoot example. Although this was set in South Africa, it was in the winter months with roughly the same temperatures you can expect in the Netherlands in Spring. So their family photoshoot outfits work for both scenarios. Monica, Don, Sienna and Declan were great models :)Declan was a ball of energy, which thankfully we turned into positives during the photoshoot :). Sitting still was a challenge for him but with such great parents who just go with the flow we turned this into great spontaneous shots of running, smiling and kisses :). Sienna was stunning for all of her photos posing perfectly and giving amazing smiles.
What to remember when planning a spring family photoshoot
There are a few things to think about when planning a spring family photoshoot, so be sure you plan accordingly. Here are our top tips for planning a spring family photoshoot
Spring family photoshoot planning tips
- Make sure you plan your spring family photoshoot as early as possible so that you get a chance to postpone if necessary – the weather can be fickle this time of year and can give you what seems like ten seasons in one day. So you need to be flexible and prepared to change where necessary
- The flowers are there, and the next minute they are gone – and the season changes every year , just to keep us all on our toes, so you need to know when the flowers will bloom and plan flexibly around that as well (if you want flowers as your background)
- If you are going to a popular location with a very short season like the cherry blossoms in het amsterdamse bos then you need to rather have an early morning photoshoot because it can get very crowded during the day and evening, even during the week.
- Bear in mind how you will get to the location, especially if you have little ones – travelling by car to the more remote locations is often easier but check what parking might cost and its availability. The cherry blossoms in particular are very crowded and there is often no parking available if you go during busy times.
- Your outfit should shout spring, but this can be tricky to do as it can be quite chilly still – bring something at least a little warm especially if you are having an early morning spring family photoshoot, and if you are brave enough then you can take this off for a few photos as well. Rather than freezing through the whole photoshoot which is no fun. More spring family photoshoot outfit tips below 🙂
Spring family photoshoot outfit tips and ideas
Spring family photoshoot outfits can be a little tricky to coordinate, as you not only have to get the whole family to look and feel coordinated, but you also have to try and prepare for all seasons, while keeping it light and airy and fresh. There is a tradition in the Netherlands that women announce spring by starting to wear skirts on so called skirt day So it is only fitting to wear skirts and dresses and anything that hints towards the warmth of summer. SO here are some tips to help you prepare for your spring family photoshoot
Spring family photoshoot outfit tips
- Think of using layers in your outfits with the colours you choose – using layers will also let you dress for different weather conditions where necessary , and something like a small denim jacket can really save you on a chilly spring day.
- Think of the background you will have in your photos. The cherry blossoms go really well with light pinks or whites, but the tulips for instance may depend on the colour of the tulips that are in your background. The daffodils being yellow work nicely with a yellow and blue outfit, as do sunflowers. Or if you arent going for flowers at all but just somewhere out in nature then bear in mind it will probably be greener than it has been in a while , so blues or pastels generally work quite well, like the photos above.
- Consider your shoes. Having photos in these locations may look stunning in the photos, but as we mentioned there is often a lot of walking involved, and because it is still the rainy season, it can often be a little muddy as well. So my advice would be to wear comfortable shoes, not stilettos (you will sink) and preferably not white as they are not likely to stay white.
- Accessorise – we already spoke about a small jacket which is a great accessory, but other great ideas can be a small shawl or ribbons in the hair for your daughter. A trendy hat can also make for some great shots.
- Bring a change of clothes with you in case something goes wrong. especially for the kids. Think potentially muddy conditions and outdoor play and you get the idea. We don’t want to restrict their play too much because these are what make amazing family photos, so if you have a change of clothes you can relax a little knowing there is a backup.
