12 Cozy Winter Family photoshoot outfit tips-What to wear
Inspiration for your winter family photoshoot outfits
A winter family photoshoot may not be as popular as its summer counterpart, but winter offers its own magic , and whether you are in South Africa or the Netherlands, there are many ways to celebrate with a winter photoshoot. Here we are going to talk about the best things to wear for a winter family photoshoot and why we love these ideas. First here is a winter family photoshoot with the Rall family done at Vega equestrian.
What colours to use for winter family photoshoot outfits
In the Rall family photos their bold colours stand out really well against the browns and dry winter background in south Africa. But the same applies if you are in the netherlands, where the trees are bare during the winter but if you are lucky to get some sun you have a rich warm background. Here are our tips for colour co-ordinating your winter family photoshoot outfits.
How to use colours for your winter family photoshoot outfits
- Try to use complimenting colours, that use the same colour palette, but are not necessarily exactly the same colour. There are many complimenting colours you can use, and this link should help you decide what can work best for you and which colours to use together.
- For a winter photoshoot its best to use warm and bold colours that compliment each other. For example in the shoot above The rall family uses burgundy and navy. They are complimenting colours but also bold so they stand out nicely against the background.
- Alternatively use neutral tones that blend well with the background, such as fawn , mustard or brown. They also work really well with golden hour light which is even more prominent in winter. A great example is from Leanne and Elroy’s engagement photo session.
- Using different shades of the same colour is also an option and creates a sense of harmony without being too matchy-matchy.
- Try not to use anything with too many patterns or distractions – Small patterns are ok, but bold or very busy patterns can be a distraction and actually take away from the photo.
- Rather try to use interesting textures to add depth. materials like chunky wool are a great example for creating warmth and coziness in your photos.
- Closed shoes are generally a good idea in Winter, but make sure they go well with your outfit and also that they are comfortable to walk in, no matter what terrain you are using.
Other things to consider when choosing your winter family photoshoot outfits
Your winter family photoshoot outfits are not just about the colour and texture though. There is more to consider. Here are some other tips for your winter family photoshoot outfits
- Consider what your background will be and try to dress to match the background that you will be using. For instance, the Rall family above had their photoshoot with horses – so country checkered shirts and jeans were a great choice to blend with the setting.
- The same goes for your comfort level – You need to be comfortable enough to move- play around with your kids, run, jump, sit, stand – I always joke with my clients that a photoshoot is a bit of a workout – so be sure you are ready for one!
- Accessorize! -Especially in the Netherlands in winter, things like scarves, beanies, shawls, gloves, or a cuddly blanket can all be great accessories. In South Africa, where it is still relatively warm, you can accessorise with jewellery for instance.
- Dress in layers Rather than too many bulky jackets – Layers will keep you warmer, and bulky jackets can make you look frumpy in photos – But the added advantage of layers is that you can effectively easily change the look and feel of your photos halfway through the shoot, and if you are brave enough, even make it look a little summery for one or two of your photos! But layers also add visual interest and can be a chance to use complimentary colours as well.
- Consider the weather and have a backup plan where necessary. You may need to dress warmer than you originally thought, or shoot at an alternative location if the weather is not right. So its best to have a back up plan in this case.
- Also have backup outfits for your children in case of an accident – if you have a slip in the mud for instance.
