3 Insightful tips from wedding photography in the Netherlands
A Perfect Summer Wedding Reception at Boerderij De Deel in Rheden
Some weddings feel like they were made for summer. Minh and Stephan’s intimate celebration at Boerderij De Deel in Rheden was exactly that — warm, relaxed, and filled with personal touches that reflected their story. As their wedding photographer, I had the joy of capturing not only their emotions but also the unique charm of this rustic forest venue. In this blogpost I will go through some of the insights and tips I collected from this real wedding photography in the netherlands so you can use them when you are planning your own wedding , maybe even at this beautiful location!
The Charm of Boerderij De Deel
Boerderij De Deel is a renovated farmhouse set on the edge of Nationaal Park Veluwezoom. It is a perfect location for wedding photography in the Netherlands and has so much to offer. What I love most here is the combination of rustic interiors — exposed wooden beams, brick walls, and soft natural light through big windows — with the surrounding forest. Hidden pathways and towering trees create a magical backdrop, especially for couples who want their trouwfoto’s to feel natural and timeless.
👉 Tip for couples: if you love the idea of photos surrounded by greenery, and are planning for wedding photography in the Netherlands ask your photographer to plan part of your shoot along the forest paths. The tall trees filter the light beautifully, even on a sunny afternoon.
An Intimate Ceremony
This location is the perfect setting for an intimate ceremony – it has a cosy warm feeling to it .
Minh and Stephan exchanged personal vows in front of about forty of their closest family and friends. The ceremony was heartfelt and simple, with laughter, a few happy tears, and a ring exchange that felt both tender and powerful. I love how they integrated their journey as a couple into their wedding day .
👉 Tip for couples: writing personal vows makes your ceremony incredibly photogenic. The raw emotion — smiles, tears, nervous giggles — always shines through in pictures. A more intimate ceremony also normally makes you feel comfortable enough to be emotional and real as you are among people you love.
Tips for capturing these types of Creative wedding photo Poses
Because the wedding took place in the middle of the day, we worked mainly in the open shade under the trees. This kept the light soft and flattering. I guided Minh and Stephan through a few of my favorite prompts:
-
The Walk & Laugh: I asked them to share the funniest memory of their first date while walking hand-in-hand. Their natural smiles andlaugher from this were priceless
-
The Imaginary Line: halfway along a path, I told them there was an invisible line they had to fight for. Within seconds they were laughing, nudging, and playfully teasing each other.
-
Hide & Seek under the Veil: I like to break the awkwardness by having the couple hide under the veil and simply say “hi” to each other. It always sparks giggles and genuine connection.
-
The Dance Without Music: at the forest edge, Stephan held Minh close as her dress swirled. Even without music, it looked like a perfect first dance.
👉 Tip for couples: don’t stress about posing. The best trouwfoto ideeën come from prompts that make you laugh, move, or simply connect with each other. Trust your photographer to guide you, and follow the prompts – thatthey might sound ridiculous is exactly the point – it helps you to relax and be more real with each other in front of the camera.
Tips for when to have your wedding - season and time of day
Golden Hour Potential for wedding photography in the netherlands
Minh and Stephan’s wedding took place in the middle of summer, with the couple photos happening around 4pm. At that time of year, the sun is still very high, which can make the light harsh. Luckily, Boerderij De Deel offers plenty of open shade under the tall trees, so we were able to capture soft, flattering portraits even in the midday sun.
Golden hour, however, is a different story. That magical time when the sun hangs low and everything is bathed in a golden glow doesn’t happen in the Netherlands until around 9pm in summer. For Minh and Stephan, sneaking away wasn’t even an option — their reception was already wrapped up by 6pm, long before golden hour began.
👉 Tip for couples: Wedding photography in the netherlands is a bit different to wedding photography in south africa because of the changes in season and the changes in daylight hours mainly. If the photographs are one of your top priorities, it’s worth consulting with your photographer early in the planning process. They can advise you on the best time of day (and even time of year) for portraits. That doesn’t mean your entire wedding has to revolve around the photos — but it may help you make thoughtful decisions about your date and schedule so you get the images you’ve been dreaming of.
The Best Time of Year for wedding photography in the netherlands
While Minh and Stephan’s summer wedding was beautiful, I often tell couples that autumn is truly the most spectacular season in the Veluwe. The forest around this venue transforms as the leaves change into rich shades of red, orange, and gold. These colors create a breathtaking backdrop for trouwfoto’s and bring a warm, romantic atmosphere to the entire day.
👉 Tip for couples: if you’re drawn to vibrant, seasonal colors in your photos, consider an autumn wedding. The autumn colours in the forests make this a dream location for wedding photography in the netherlands. One point to consider though is that autumn is also the rainy season, so there is a risk that it might rain on your wedding day . This of course can also create some spectacular rainy wedding day photos, it may be an idea to make sure you have a plan B in place.

Why I Loved This Wedding
What stood out most about Minh and Stephan’s day wasn’t the setting or the details — it was the intimacy. Surrounded by just forty guests, every laugh and every word of their vows felt amplified. Boerderij De Deel, with its mix of rustic charm and forest romance, was the perfect stage.
As a photographer, this wedding reminded me that the most beautiful trouwfoto’s come from genuine moments — a shared laugh, a stolen glance, a quiet touch — set against a backdrop that feels true to the couple.
