What makes a couple photography session romantic?
First off to create romantic couple photography ideas we have to understand what makes couple photography romantic. It has a lot to do with relaxing in front of the camera and being yourselves and finding the connection and intimacy between the couple. Here are some of the romantic couple photography ideas we use and how I create them.
Romantic couple photography ideas to help the couple relax
- Start off the session by loosening up – I generally get the couple to walk hand in hand but actually fight for the same imaginary line to walk along. this creates a few laughs and helps everyone relax as well as creating some great shots.
- Whisper in her ear – I don’t want to know what you say to her but make her smile – this gives the feeling of a secret between the two and normally gets a smile from the partner – it’s intimate and sweet.
- One wraps the other up and the prompt is to ask the one being held to try and get away – this normally creates a few laughs – you can improvise by asking the one holding to also try and kiss their neck or ear etc – sometimes this creates a really cute couple photo moment as well.
- The classic dance dip – this is one of the most classic romantic couple photography ideas and actually quite easy to pull off – All they need to do is lean their partner over slightly and if the partner trusts the process they can lean back and lift their one knee slightly – variations like a kiss on the neck add an extra romantic photo element.
- twirling in a circle , – this works really well if there is a flowy dress involved for instance, but it works with any one. It is also a classic, and getting the couple to do something with movement and direction also generally helps them to relax.
- Piggy back ride – this is a fun one to try and also helps the couple to have fun together
More intimate romantic couple photography poses
- Getting one to kiss the other on their favourite part of their face, neck , ears etc creates an intimate pose and a great close up.
- Nose to nose or almost kissing also creates a little tension in the photograph and a different kind of intimate moment.
- A hand on the cheek or neck , pulling each other close to each other creates a little drama
- All wrapped up in a blanket or sitting close to each other , or lying close to each other on stomachs or backs .
How to make sure you get the romantic couple photography ideas you want
Having all these romantic couple photography ideas is great, but it is not the only thing you will need for a successful romantic couple photoshoot. Here are some of the things you need to do to prepare for your couple photoshoot.
- Choose a photographer whose style you love – ask to see previous work and try to imagine yourself in their work . Does it suit you?
- Communicate with the photographer – tell them what type of images you are looking for , what style you want to achieve, and even give examples (although bear in mind they will have their own style, and examples are not there to be copied exactly)
- Choose a location that is meaningful to you as a couple – like where you first met or somewhere that you love to spend time together . This will make the final photos more meaningful to you overall, and it is a place you can fall in love all over again . If will set the tone and mood for your couple photoshoot.
- Think about your outfits carefully – you don’t have to match exactly, but wearing complimenting colours goes a long way, and if you can wear a dress with a bit of flow, this helps to create movement and drama in photos. But wear something that you will be comfortable in overall – as being comfortable in your photos is more important than any outfit.
- Have the photoshoot during golden hour where possible – the sunlight at this time gives a warm romantic glow that is unbeatable any other time of day.
