Preparing for your birthday photography

No two birthday celebrations are the same. Before the event, we can meet with you either online or preferably at the venue itself to chat with you about various aspects of your birthday photography:

• Your theme and décor – what is your look and feel for the event, and when will the set up take place. if we go to the venue we can also discuss where certain decor such as a photo wall will be set up.

• The flow of the celebration – When would you like me to capture which aspects? For instance do we need to capture each guest as they arrive? Is there time for a few couple or family photos before the main guests arrive?

• Special moments you want captured. For instance a first dance, giving a special gift, or cake cutting

• Key people at the event – who will be there that you specifically want pictures with or of.

• Any surprises or speeches – For instance from Si’Anns 40th a few key details helped me to prepare for this event in advance of a surprise performance by Jaryd Smith. This was a treat for the guests and a key moment the couple wanted photographed. 

This helps us tailor your birthday photography coverage so it fits your vision perfectly.

Great photos don’t happen by accident — they happen with planning.
We help you create a smooth timeline tat maximises the best lighting where possible –  including:

• When to capture décor

• The best time for portraits – For instance with this couple the blue hour really worked for a few couple photos in the evening.

• The ideal moment for cake cutting or champagne toasts – if this is to be captured then I will need to know where you will stand, when the cake will be brought out etc.

• How to work around venue lighting – for instance for the photo wall at this event extra lighting was needed .

Our approach to birthday photography

My approach to birthday photography focuses on real emotions and genuine interactions. I love to capture moments as they happen and when people are less aware of the camera. Of course this is mixed in with any posed moments you want to have with your guests, but the true magic you will remember are the moments you experienced together.

I like to blend into the atmosphere so guests feel comfortable and natural in front of the camera. I also work on balancing ambient light with flash where necessary to keep the lighting looking as natural as possible and capturing the mood of your theme .

Posed moments can be captured if requested or if you have a spot for specific photos and a window of time set aside for this. After all you may not often get the chance to be together with all of your family and friends often, so this is the perfect opportunity to document it.

Alongside candid coverage, its an idea to capture flattering portraits of:

• The birthday person – this is the perfect moment for you to shine !

• Close family members – coming together as a family may not happen that often so be sure to seize the opportunity

We handle all the technical aspects and challenges that come with an event:

• Low-light photography – events are often at night or indoors

• Flash setups – often required with posed photos or in low light

• Fast-moving action – this is a challenge when there is low light as well , but we will do this expertly.

• adapting to delays or unplanned moments where necessary – this is an event and I recognise that things do not always go according to plan. I can adapt easily and quickly to any situation.

After the event, you’ll receive a curated collection of professionally edited images.
Your gallery will include:

Most clients receive their final gallery within 3-4 weeks, with a sneak peek within a week. But a full edit can be done earlier if necessary in discussion.
